GA4 key events, ad conversions and incremental sales: stop mixing them up

Two advertising platforms can both claim credit for the same sale. An analytics report can use a different attribution model and show another answer. None of that means three customers bought the product.

Measurement remains a live issue for digital marketing teams in 2026. Google’s 2025 announcements put more attention on incrementality testing and cross-channel measurement. Before exploring another reporting feature, get clear about the question you are trying to answer.

Three questions, three different jobs

First: what action matters to the business? Second: which touchpoints receive credit in a report? Third: did the marketing produce additional outcomes that would not otherwise have happened?

Event tracking helps with the first question. Attribution addresses the second. A suitable incrementality experiment addresses the third. A well-presented attribution chart does not, by itself, prove that a campaign caused a sale.

Pick actions that have a business meaning

Google Analytics uses key events for actions important to your business. Google Ads conversions are used to measure advertising performance and optimise bidding. A GA4 key event can be used to create an Ads conversion when the relevant accounts, access and setup are in place.

For a service business, a successful enquiry submission is usually more useful than a click on the contact button. Even then, an enquiry and a qualified opportunity are different things. For a shop, check whether purchase events represent completed orders and whether duplicate collection is inflating the count.

Test a real journey

Choose one outcome and follow it from beginning to end. Complete the action on the website, check the recorded event, then confirm the result in the business system that matters: an order, an enquiry or a booked appointment.

Do not stop at seeing a tag fire. A form can trigger an event before the submission succeeds. A purchase event can fire again when a confirmation page is refreshed. Testing those ordinary situations is often more valuable than adding another dashboard.

Document attribution before comparing channels

GA4 attribution settings include a reporting model and lookback window. Those choices influence how credit is allocated. Before comparing two reports, check whether they are using the same date range, outcome definition and reporting assumptions.

Record the settings with the report. When a number changes, you need to know whether performance changed or the way credit was assigned changed. Comparing totals without that context can send a budget discussion in the wrong direction.

When you need to know what caused the result

Incrementality asks what happened because of the marketing, beyond what would have happened anyway. Google announced improvements to incrementality testing in 2025, but availability and suitability should be checked in the current account. A small business should not assume every advertised experiment is appropriate for its budget or data.

A credible experiment needs a useful comparison, a meaningful outcome and enough information to interpret the result. If the data cannot support a confident answer, report that limitation rather than forcing a verdict.

Privacy is part of measurement, not an extra

Before changing collection or introducing user-provided data, review consent, data handling and the applicable platform policies. Hashing information does not remove every privacy obligation. For UK businesses, get appropriate advice where the setup or legal position is uncertain.

A cleaner monthly report

  • Define the business outcome and how it is verified.
  • Check the website journey and duplicate events.
  • Record account linking and attribution settings.
  • Separate attributed conversions from incremental impact.
  • State data gaps and testing limitations clearly.

Better measurement is often less about collecting more numbers and more about refusing to let one number answer three different questions. If your team needs help connecting SEO with business priorities, explore Craig’s training or a consultancy conversation.
